| The World in Solemn Stillness Lay is a fantasy work by the talented arranger, Matthew Prins and is based on the standard Christmas piece, It Came Upon the Midnight Clear. The piece sets and maintains a mood with the use of random ringing, singing bells and a haunting vocal line. Matthew makes use of multiple meter throughout with major sections in 5/4, 4/4 and 3/4. At times, the piece is very transparent and at others very complex with as many as four simultaneous lines that make this piece a solid musical experience. More thoughtful than standard and more new-age than traditional, this piece has that "wow" and "cool" factor that will become a memorable selection on your concert. At over 200 measures and a performance time of about 8-9 minutes, this piece is a borderline 3+ to 4- with a nod to the harder level due to the length. This may become one of your favorite versions of this Christmas song! Enjoy! |
